Bonnie Gordon is one of the most imaginative artists in the United States. Her work has consistently challenged categorization because she manipulates imagery and text—literally stretching it—to create works that have ranged from single two-dimensional cyanotype photographic prints to enormous, gallery-filled sculptural installations. Undulating textual threads take seemingly serendipitous journeys across the surface of her works, tracing and changing meaning in a visual manifestation of contemporary theory that addresses how the unconscious functions.
A native of Buffalo, Gordon received a B.F.A. in Illustration and Design, magna cum laude, from Syracuse University in 1962. She earned her M.F.A. in Printmaking and Painting, summa cum laude, from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1970. She worked as a medical and editorial illustrator (days) and as a printmaker and painter (nights) in New York City and Los Angeles before returning to Buffalo in 1971 to teach in the Design Department at Buffalo State College. Her artwork has been exhibited internationally and is represented in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, International Center of Photography, Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Burchfield Penney Art Center, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Castellani Art Museum, among others.
