Arthur E. Baggs studied at Alfred University with Dr. Charles F. Binns, who was considered "the father of American ceramic art." He was elected head of the Ceramic Art Division of the Fine Arts Department (later known as the School of Fine and Applied Arts) at Ohio State University around 1928. He was a beloved teacher and colleague, and he received numerous awards for his ceramic pottery. Examples of his work are in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, NY; and Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio. According to a memorial published by Carlton Atherton in Design magazine, "He was given the Binns medal for outstanding achievement, made a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society and a member of Keramos. His own University at Alfred conferred upon him the honorary L.H.D. degree [Doctor of Humane Letters], the highest form of recognition in its power."
