Alice Johnson studied oil painting with Mrs. H. G. Ely at the Fredonia Normal School in the late 1870s, graduating in 1879. On 4 October 1880, Mrs. Ely “had a grand exhibition at the Normal School of the work of her present and former pupils. Alice attended art school in New York City, possibly at the Cooper Union. In 1889 she and two other women travelled to Europe for a year, primarily to pursue art studies in Paris.
