Araan Schmidt is a sculpture who uses found materials, casting metals and mixed media for his pieces and installations. The artist’s cast iron pieces focus on the fluidity and movement of the organic process of casting itself. The material is manipulated to different textures in a way highlighting that organic material and manual processes are not stagnant; each are unique and changeable for at least a period of time. Schmidt earned a B.F.A. at the Kansas City Art Institute followed by an M.F.A. in sculpture at the University of Minnesota in 2008. Araan is currently an Assistant Professor of Sculpture at Colorado Mesa University and has taught sculpture at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, Alfred University and Binghamton University in New York. His works have been exhibited throughout the country in both outdoor sculpture parks and indoor galleries and museums such as the Franconia Sculpture Park in Minnesota and at the Maryland Art Place in Baltimore.
