My work explores the ideas of interdependence and empathy. “Warm Bodies in the Ocean” is a piece about the relationship between community, humanity, and dance. It speaks on how moving together is a universal bond unique to humans. This conversation includes a dynamic understanding of the body and its power, beauty, and influence within oneself and the world.
Interdependence is a significant realization that I have come to within the past few years, that, mutually, we all depend on others to live and that they, too, depend on us to live. The concept has had a massive impact on me which can be seen in my art. This work, especially, shows the power of dance in building community and creating a form of togetherness and intimacy.
This project has helped me to step out of my comfort zone in many ways. I have never enjoyed painting as much as I have in this space and with these people. I have also never been able to paint on such a large and beautiful canvas, so bringing access to these mediums to us youth has been very heartening. On that note, too, it built my confidence as an artist and human being to be here with fellow artists of all ages. Hearing their criticism, compliments, and conversations has helped me to create an artwork I can be genuinely proud of and excited to hang up. Seeing my work sit beside the other artists at the Burchfield Penney as an independent artwork and mural is the best way to conclude this amazing program.
