batik wax resist fiber technique

"This piece is constructed using a modified batik wax resist technique. Paraffin is hand painted into the fabric before acrylic paint is forced deep into the fibers. Once dry the wax is scraped and burnished rather than removed leaving a high contrast pattern between the crackled light-diffusing wax and fully opaque paint."
From the artist:
"Originally conceived as a site-specific temporary installation replacing the largest stained-glass window of the disused Church of the Transfiguration at Sycamore and Mills Streets on Buffalo’s East Side. Built by Polish immigrants in 1896, the gothic revival church has fallen into extreme disrepair since being abandoned by the diocese in the early 1990s, but once again has an owner who is dedicated to revitalizing the historic structure. This new window design is a poem in honor of migration and immigration. It reflects the residents of the neighborhood, old and new, who have called this place home, creating a shifting social and cultural ecology within the expanding urban prairie that surrounds it."
