“Corvus – A response to Maria Pabica LaRotonda”
At night am I
quilted, folded, sewn at the mouth to anyone’s hand walking along the
river
I saw three mountains offering up high unholy praise
themselves shopworn at the shoulder
claptrap at the theater where the boys peddle tin cups and trinkets that
make promises
that make promises
they surely keep
Who but you
comes sweet at the twilight
I saw three mountains and my name was burned into the peaks of each one
It was the age of square dancing in the streets
Gutted by the fury of it all
Our legs flying our feet somehow above us
Dancing with a life that stretched far outside our bodies
The movement a message from some oblivion
where we might one day return
after the sweat has spent us
A message
I keep at my ear
--I hear it--
Message delivered to us
by a crow
