Sunlight Pouring Down is the title that Burchfield wrote on the back of the painting, but he wrote a text about it calling it "July Sunlight Pouring Down,” c. 1952-58, text, ink on paper mounted on board, 8 1/2 x 8 7/16 inches, Burchfield Penney Art Center, Charles E. Burchfield Archives, transcribed below:
“July Sunlight Pouring Down”
The aim was to give the feeling of brilliant sunlight pouring down from the zenith — This is not the searing sunlight of a drought season; rather it is a life-giving flood of warmth and light, which the earth and all things growing on it drink in with gratitude; a benediction from the Creator of all life.
(Painted on the Genesee road, southeast of East Aurora, N.Y.).
