Son Charles Arthur at home, 3574 Clinton Street, Gardenville, New York
Each of Burchfield’s children posed for a portrait during the 1930s. Arthur, who was born on June 1, 1929, is reading a book—to help keep him still—while other favorite toys sit at his feet. Father and son cherished shared activities, such as sanding frames in the studio or exploring nature. —Nancy Weekly, 2014
The eldest daughter’s painting, Portrait Study in a Spring Landscape (Mary Alice), has an unfinished background landscape. For their portraits, Martha and Catherine were originally painted together seated on a log, but in 1960 he cut the portrait in half and expanded each composition so each daughter could have her own painting. Martha's became known as Portrait Study in a Spring Landscape (Martha) and her sister's became Artist’s Daughter—Catherine. Information about Sally's portrait is not available
