Bequest of Annette M. Cravens
With an interest in science fiction, film, and biological systems, Kathi Roussel has produced a wide range of artworks. Her surreal pod-like ceramic sculpture Life Form (1998) was acquired as the Sylvia L. Rosen Endowment Purchase Award from the exhibition, Craft Art in Western New York, 1998. Cracked and Sewn Ceramic Bowl (2008) is a far more conceptual work, inviting a range of possible free associations. For example, its suggestive mirroring of the medium’s fragility as evidenced in archaeological artifacts may have appealed to Annette Cravens’ knowledge of ancient and contemporary ceramics.
Roussel is a member of the Buffalo Arts Studio. Her blog, “grindstone girl’s daily” provides commentary about the seasons, gardening, her handmade jewelry, and other aesthetic topics. —NW
