John Maggiotto describes himself as “born in Buffalo, raised on gasoline, educated by artists.” We know him as a director of Hallwalls in 1979 who went to Washington, DC to take a 3-year position at the National Endowment for the Arts. In the 1980s he moved to Los Angeles, then back to Brooklyn, where he transitioned from camera work on paper to printing on marble and plaster. His four-panel artwork depicts one of the Statues of Liberty on top of the Liberty Bank Building in downtown Buffalo. The national icon was a gift from France, delivered on June 17, 1885. She was originally called “Liberty Enlightening the World,” a concept continuing to be embraced by immigrants and citizens of our country.
