The swieconka basket is a long-standing tradition within Polish culture, especially in Western New York. This basket containing the breakfast for Easter morning is blessed by the priest the day before. Everything has a meaning, right down to the lining of the basket. Each item in the basket symbolizes an aspect of the Easter story, like the sugared treats, which symbolize the sweetness of Heaven.
For kids: Do you have a favorite meal for the holidays? For a Polish family, Easter breakfast is the most important. They have the same thing every year! The food is put into a basket the day before and taken to the church to be blessed. Every piece of food even gets its own prayer.
Does your family have a traditional meal? What is in it?
