Filled with love for Bertha Kenreich and anticipating their marriage in May, Burchfield was invigorated by the earth’s seasonal transformation. On March 23^rd he described the sights on one of his hikes: “A wonderful Spring day— The sun springs up in the morning with a blinding glare — The west sky is a deep blue — trees stand stark & bold, vivid orange & yellow with deep red orange branches; houses glow with color; the eaves are aglitter with gay icicles; it is a morning for brave thoughts & physical exultation —.”
