Filled with love for Bertha Kenreich and anticipating their marriage in May, Burchfield was invigorated by the earth’s seasonal transformation. On March 23rd he described the sights on one of his hikes: “A wonderful Spring day— The sun springs up in the morning with a blinding glare — The west sky is a deep blue — trees stand stark & bold, vivid orange & yellow with deep red orange branches; houses glow with color; the eaves are aglitter with gay icicles; it is a morning for brave thoughts & physical exultation —.”
