This beaver pond was my favorite painting spot for many years before a heavy
spring run-off blew out the dam one spring. I witnessed this scene in dawn early light.
Most of the subject was bathed in the predawn shadow light while the warm sky formed
a radiant halation on the mountainʼs edge. This scene seemed a tapestry of patterns of
the various mountain forms, trees and branches, water and reflections and snow. That
is how I wanted to paint it. And this work needed to be painted large. I soaked a 300 lb.
40” X 60” sheet of paper and stretched it over some heavy duty stretcher bars. When
totally dry I did this painting using watercolor and casein.
