"The work is a rough draft of an essay by the same name that appears in Dreamworlds of Alabama. It was written on accounting paper with a Pelikan fountain pen. Images were spliced in with a razor. The work hung on the wall next to my desk until the artist Molly Jarboe saw something in it. The piece was stabilized with tape and glue and framed. The sun had faded the ink in certain sections. It is an attempt at adding another surface to reading and a demonstration of the psychic materialism of writing. It's just by chance that it resembles the lips of the summer squash blossom crawling with fire ants." -Allen Shelton
