For Adults
Over two thousand years ago a child was born in a manger outside of the city of Nazareth, Israel. At the time, this child, who would be known as Jesus of Nazareth or Jesus Christ, became a beacon of hope. Today he is the face of the Christian religion that has more than 2.2 billion followers. This Nativity Crèche scene is a representation of his birth. Usually the Nativity scene offers the same elements: a manger; the Holy Family of St. Joseph, Mary of Nazareth, and baby Jesus; three Wise Men; angels, and animals which are usually, but not limited to, an ox, a sheep, and a donkey. The origins of depicting the birth scene started in Germany during the 1600’s.
For Kids
The Christian holiday known as Christmas represents the birth of Jesus Christ, who is for more than 2.2 billion people, their spiritual lord and savior. One of the oldest traditions of celebrating Christmas is the display of the Nativity scene, which started in Germany during the 1600’s. It has changed very little since then. Each Nativity scene can be different, but it always has the main components of the Holy Family (Jesus, Mary of Nazareth, and St. Joseph), a manger or shelter, angels, and animals.
Does your family or church put up a Nativity Scene? How does this one compare to others you have seen each Christmas?
I-Spy: Can you name the animals surrounding the Holy Family?
