In the late Middle Ages witchcraft was at its peak. “Witches” were believed to have satanic powers, to change their form, to fly, and to cause misfortune, sickness and death. They are depicted as creatures of the night and were believed to be especially active on Halloween.
For kids:
A witch usually looks old and scary. Sometimes she is a widow living alone with her black cat, which is the form of her spirit. Her peaked hat shows her importance. Witches were always seen as frightening, but now our idea of witches has changed. Do you like Harry Potter? He is a witch and he is not so scary. Who is your favorite witch?
