Artist Statement: Lilly is an insatiable maker and finds herself drawn to collage for the push and pull of creation and destruction it allows. For her project, Lilly wanted to focus on making LeRoi Johnson’s paintings come alive. Through a series of processes, Lilly physically remixed the paintings through collage, scanned the collages, then using the open-source effect processing program PHOTOMOSH, applied a series of motion variables to create moving images. Lilly saw a quilting quality to the paintings of LeRoi, with their geometric shapes and bold colors. To emulate this, Lilly utilized the computer desktop to create an array of these manipulations into one digital quilt.
