ROBERT LAX
(June 30-July 27)
Lax, a noted poet, who works frequently with Emil Antonucci, returns to Artpark this summer to conduct poetry workshops and presentations. Born in Olean, New York, he was educated at Columbia University, and has published in such respected magazines as the New Yorker, Commonweal, Vogue, New York Quarterly, and Harper’s Bazaar. He has been a staff writer for the New Yorker, a film critic for Time, and a screenwriter in Hollywood. Lax edited Jubilee magazine for nine years, and was the publisher of PAX, a poetry magazine. He has also served on the faculties at the University of North Carolina and Connecticut College, and recently returned from sic years on the Greek Islands of Patmos, Mytilini, and Kalymnos.
Lax’s concrete poetry concentrates on objects and evidence immediately before the eye. Frequently, an object mentioned in a poem suggests others that are not. The result is a complex system of metaphors created out of stark and simple language.
