My Immortal Beloved,
I do not wish to be presumptuous. But, my angel, my all, my other self, just a few words today and that in ink (my blood); only tomorrow! Why this deep sorrow when necessity speaks? Can our love exist other than by sacrifices, by not desiring everything? Can you help it that you are not mine, that I am not all yours? Can you help it that you are? Oh God, look at the loveliness of nature & calm your spirit about what has to be—love demands everything, & perfectly so. If we could be united, you would feel this pain as little as I. we will no doubt be together soon—TODAY! If our hearts were always close to one another I would probably not make any observations about external matters. My heart is full of things to tell you—oh!—there are moments when 2 feel that speech is nothing whatsoever. Be cheerful, remain my faithful, one & only treasure, my everything, as I am yours; for the rest, the Gods must send what shall be for us!
With really good feelings towards you, Paul
P.S.- You can’t put footnotes in a personal letter.
