Paul Sharits (1943-1993)

Four Bell & Howell 16 mm. projectors, each with “Eterna” loop device units. Four Bose speakers, 1 in each corner of the square room. A quadraphonic soundtrack of a series of brandy glasses being dropped on a sheet of plate glass. Recorded and played back in such a manner that the glasses seem hugely out of proportion (as are the blown up filmstrip images) and sound as if they are being dropped near or upon the viewer. One doesn’t know when or where, in the space, the next glass will fall and crash. One is not listening to the glasses breaking, but rather, one is in the situation, is located definitively in the room’s space.
