Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967)

These stands of birch trees seem to exist for the sole purpose of conveying the patterns that Burchfield has rendered in their bark. The bark designs echo through the three panels of the triptych, while the tree’s orange-red, fallen leaves are patterned in different densities, as if to imply the passage of time.
