see “Miracle on 34th St”—a fanciful picture concerning an old man who played Santa Claus for Macy’s and who really believed he was Santa Claus. Very good—well done.; ; ; ; ; Aug 30 (Sat.); Finished the frames (five today). So completely tired I could not sleep. At 3:00 A.M. I was still “tossing feverishly”—; ; ; ; ; Aug 31—; Hank & Mart to dinner (chicken etc.)—; P.M. “ – “ decide suddenly to go on a little trip—with no particular destination in view—we promised to look after Chopper and they left. It seemed more devastatingly lonely after they were gone.; Evening—B & I to Vogue—to see an Australian Picture—“The Overlanders”—Having to do with the time during the recent war when an invasion of Northern Australia by the Japanese seemed imminent; a rancher decided to drive 1000 head of cattle to Queensland to save them from the invader. A picture reminiscent of many of Hollywood’s “Westerns,” particularly the “Covered Wagon” of 1923. Technically it did not seem far beyond that picture, altho perhaps my memory of the “Covered Wagon” has brought it more up to date than it really was. The Australians depicted in this picture, seemed, like to English to be a sort of “pinched” race, with the same nasal twang and oblique
