94. in the west, the sun a soft pink golden glow - the dense gray blue haze of mid august saturated the distance, and middle-ground - the only way I can describe the effect it produced is that it made the landscape look tired. Stagnant perhaps could be used - too.
After I had eaten, I took a walk into the woods, and than after another contemplation of the scene to the west, I started for home. I kept turning westward at every chance to get back to the Boston Valley country. I went thru Colden, and eventually came out on the Lower East Hill Road, (from which there is a magnificent view to the east and south over the Olean Road Valley) and thence to Omphalius Rd (delightful name!) and to the Cole Rd, and thru Orchard Park. The pale tall thunderheads striding along the northern sky after sunset.[i]

Neel, in suggesting that members of the congregation express their opinions after, singled me out and said "particularly am I thinking of Mr. Burchfield, whose opinions on music, art and other matter are much sought after by the press" !! It was terribly embarrassing to me, and completely uncalled for.[ii]
