89. July (CD).
At Abbott's, as we had feared, no berries to be had. But she said she would try to have some for us next week, since we had been coming so long.
On the return, we took a new road, which went due west thru rather wild country - (Clump of gorgeous oswego tea) - We came out on the Olean Road, at the point where in 1936, I painted the "Snow-light" -
Just before supper, as we were talking in the Pavilion Sally came out and said someone had come to see me. When I went in, he seemed familiar, but I could not "place" him at all, and he had to introduce himself. He was Ross Merten, color mixer at the Birge Co. He came to invite me to the Color-mixers + Machine Printer's picnic (branch of the G.F of L.) at Ebenezer August 1. I promised to come.[i]
July 24 - All day on the wheat-field picture, practically establishing the mood and design all over - now remains the "cleaning up" process - the hardest of all -
Yesterday morning, noticing how fast the morning glories seemed to be growing - I put a mark at the (CD) of one at 9:30. By 3:15 it had grown 2 3/8 inches, and in 24 hours it added 6½ inches.[ii]
