88. Then, the light vanished and the "heavens opened" and the torrents of rain came down. We started home, and could just see the edge of the road, all else was lost in the thick downpour of rain.
The storm lasted for hours, - the electric current was cut off until the next morning.
The following day, we read of destructive floods in the Olean district, thousands homeless, and many drowned.[i]
July 22 - in studio studying my picture and - working up the garden.
Evening to Cassel's for more berries. Mrs. Cassel seemed hostile, tho I could not understand why.[ii]
July 23 - I though I was all set to paint, but when I went into the house for water, Bertha revealed the reason for Mrs Cassel's strange behavior - all of the berries were moldy.
Angry, we decided to take then back. - We felt it would be best policy to pretend she had made a "mistake". - But we could tell by the way she talked she knew what she was doing. However, she gaves us (sic) our money back, and begged us no to tell anyone.
After we started home, we decided to go down to our original place - Abbott's at Java Village; We called up home at Marilla, and then, calming our anger, we decided to enjoy the trip as much as possible.
