July 4 - (Sat)
Take Spotty to Dr. Mook in Lancaster. After a short examination he said she had heart trouble, and that there was no cure. In reply to my question, he said that it would be kindest to put her to sleep, altho he could give her something to temporarily ease her discomfort. He gave us some pills.
A depressing day. No celebration of any sort.[ii]
July 5 -
Sally's Birthday.
Spotty seems more comfortable; more like herself tho she moves very slowly.
Late PM. All of us to Seneca Theatre to see "In this Our Life" and "Fingers at the Window" - very entertaining.[iii]
July 6 - Monday
Started work on the "Wheat field" - (Storm in the Night)
Evening transplanted some of the zinnias. -
A sullen gray day, with slight rain at times. Cool but strangely oppressive. Towards evening, the air cleared, a strong wind sprang up, and the temperature went down.
Bengert offers a job weeding to Art - He though Art could get a "buddy" to help, but his best friend, Jimmy lives on a farm - So Cathie volunteers to go too.[iv]
July 7 - Tues.
A cold night - Fresh mostly clear day - strong wind.
B + I to Bailey Market to get cherries.
Take Cathie to Bengert's farm after her lesson (Joe takes Victrola to repair) -
