65. Members of the Institute, whom I had not met came up to me and shook hands and congratulated me. All the other members filed past without so much even as a glance at any of the recipients of awards. I could not understand it - It would seem to me that Damrosch at least, as president, would unbend a little. Feeling that Bertha would perhaps be disappointed if she did not meet him, I deliberately went to him + made him meet her. It was as if the Academy honored us for our art or reputation, and further than that, washed their hands of us.
(CD) knew enough people however to save us from being too alone - Peggy Bacon, Brook, Marin, Beal, Manship etc - - The exhibition was really dreadful - "stuffy" is the only word that can describe it. We had cocktails + a few hors d'ouvres - " + then left after making arrangements to meet Frank at the hotel -
He took us to Theodore's where we had a delightful leisurely dinner, then we went to his apartment + talked + listened to the news - (the battle of the Coral Sea was in progress; and were all excited over what seemed like a splendid victory) -
To Hotel at Midnight; - looking at the half-darkened city - and exulting in our freedom.
Saturday - A leisurely, dawdling "getting up" - late breakfast - To J.H. (CD) to get materials for Art - (Mr. W's harangue to us - (CD) (CD) his clerks - scolding a customer for not knowing what he wanted - his quarrel with a paper collector etc) Raining when we came out - To Hotel - then to gallery - talk + look at pictures - The Carroll exhibit - very fine - his landscapes especially brilliantly done - To Franks apt for lunch -
Then hurried trips to the Modern Museum - + the Metropolitan
