Curiously enough, at the precise moment I arrived on the stage all fear left me, and I felt at ease. In reply to Gibson's presentation, I said only a few words of thanks, and left -
It had been a pleasure to me, as soon as I knew it - that Gibson would be the one to make the award. As a boy, I grew up when Gibson's fame was at it's height, my brother + I copied his drawings - I like him - and afterwards I made a point of speaking to him and telling him of my boyish admiration, which seemed to please him.
At the end of the ceremony I had to go back stage for newspaper photography - then everyone wandered upstairs to view the exhibition and have tea and cock-tails on the terrace.
