May 24, 1938-
A dark morning with loose heavy low lying clouds – too dark for work in the studio. B & I to Buffalo. (I took a package of poke to mail to Rehn’s-) we bought presents for the children - (scout-knife for Arthur & slack outfits for the girls). Lunch at A.M.A’s.
Evening work in garden a little; and played ball with the children.
May 25, 1938 – (Wed).
A cold morning – frost in the backyard at 8:00. J.L. tells me it was 26º at 4 A.M.
At work all day in studio, putting in the water.
May 26, 1938-
All day I am irritable and discouraged. Try as I will, I cannot make myself believe yesterday’s work (the water) is all right – It seems to be foreign in color and treatment to the rest of the picture (tho Bertha tries to persuade me it is all right.)
P.M. Putting in screens, a job I hate; especially the new ones, for the casement windows, which require the most exact maneuvering to get them in. In addition, the painters had carelessly let paint go into the catches, so that they were stuck. This necessitated taking them (the catches) apart and scraping off the paint. At the end of the day I was in a fine humor.
