I am probably faced with the outlook of chronic returns of this trouble of mine. However I suffered the full shock of this discovery two years ago, and now it does not depress me as much as then.
It started in snowing about 8 o’clock this morning, but later turned to rain, and rained all day - a dark day of penetrating chilly damp. Read in the Times tonight that snow storms are more apt to start at 8 AM and 3 PM than other hours.
April 9, 1938-
It grew colder in the night, and this morning it turned to snow - first tiny crystals, just like fine splinters. The snow came down thick all day long, the temperature around 32, and it seemed like mid-winter.
The weather induced me to work on the “Snow-remnants” which I did all day, finally, after 7 years, bringing it to a more harmonious whole. It will not need much work after this.
My birthday supper in the evening - the children had all made cards or pictures with dollar bills attached, with sentiments that brought tears to my eyes.
The N.B.C. concert tonight. I was all on fire and attuned to the music. It opened with the Oberon Overture, a pure fantastic delight. Then followed a new symphony by Dmitri Shostakovich (his 5th) which appealed to me strongly without reservations.
