Saturday night – a fine concert over the radio by Toscanini- the Borodin 2nd - superbly and powerfully played- I thot my recording good, but it paled in comparison to Toscanini’s full blooded reading. At the end of the 1st movements, the kettle drums were terrific. Followed the variations on a Haydn Theme by Brahms, and the Moldova by Smetana, both seemed alive- I seemed especially attuned for music.
Friday night- took all children to basketball game at Ebenezer.
February 28, 1938-
A severe cold wave last night. The water frozen in the back washroom. When I went to thaw it out, I cracked two T joints. Rechlin, (the plumber) over in the afternoon. I admire the way he goes at a job - no hesitancy, no figuring - he starts right in, works steadily at a controlled high pressure, and is done in an incredibly short time, leaving an excellent job behind him. Letter from Rehn telling he had to do away with his dog, C J. I felt bad for him & on my own account for I liked the dog a lot.
March 1, 1938, Tuesday-
All day long on the Steubenville picture, putting more character into the road, and catching up loose ends all over the thing - so that by the end of the day, baring a few minor details it was finished.
Evening - took children to basketball game at the school, game with Orchard Park; a close game, won by Orchard Park by one point, made after the end of the game on a foul by a Gardenville player.
