After a walk out along the river, I took a taxi to the Museum. I was too tired to get much out of it, though some pictures I enjoyed. I called on Connors & Saint-Garden, had lunch with the former; after another look-around in the afternoon, I left and called on Denehy at the Penna R.R. station.
Then I went to the station. The ride up to Buffalo was a bore; so anxious was I to get home that I could not even read a mystery novel. I left it with the Porter warning him that it was so dull that I was not at all curious as to who had killed the man & boy.
Strangely enough, in my account of the mine episode, I forgot to mention a company rule that seemed to me then ridiculous, and grows more & more hideous as time goes on. In order to keep the men always on the alert as a safety measure, it is required that the men, on meeting, instead of the customary “Hello,” or “good morning” or other human greeting, must greet each other with the warning “Be Careful.” How galling this must be to the men can only be imagined, and it seems to me that the endless repetition of the warning like an oft repeated prayer, must eventually dull their
