Get it handsomely or not at all. And I did not want to go into the mines again. For an hour or so I could not even determine my composition; then when I started it all seemed futile - then I tried the expedient of reading a little in a book, & then suddenly glancing at the picture, and all at once it seemed to be getting somewhere. I then determined to finish it up & get out by evening. With a stop for lunch, I finished it at three o’clock.
Mr. Salvati, Mr. Foster, & the chief engineer, came up to see it, & were enthusiastic. Then came Mrs. Salvati & Francis, & later Mr. McGhee - their approval of my interpretation of the coal as coal, made me feel good. I packed hastily, ate the dinner Harry has prepared, and was ready to go.
A car was supplied me to take me to Logan. As at Newgulf, I felt a regret in leaving here, after accomplishing so little. We got to Logan at 5:45, the bus left at 6:30. It came in at 6:15 & I was soon settled in my seat. A storm was coming up. Across the street there was a poplar tree lit up by a streetlight - Every so often a terrific gust of wind would strike the tree and the leaves would scatter down as tho thrown by some giant. It was a fine sight.
