I re-read “Robinson Crusoe” in the last few days. I had forgot most of it - all the early adventures, and also his frequent references to the Bible, and his struggles with religion.
June 8, 1937-
One of the hardest things I have had to do lately was to put away the Elevators picture and admit defeat for this year. My illness of the past few weeks precluded all work on it, and when I finally recovered the real season for it was gone. Even yet I do not hear a fog horn or a deep-throated boat whistle without a pang.
June 9, 1937- (Wed)
With Arthur to “18 Mile Creek” via South western Blvd. in search of “geological” (Septaria Stones) stones for the Canna garden. A gay hilarious trip for the two of us. Our first hunt, below a little bridge on a by-road, required that we doff our shoes & stockings & wade across the creek. The water was warm and soft, and thrilled me with its unaccustomed pleasure. Arthur was proud of the fact that he could stand the sharp stones on his feet better than I.
At another place, after our search for stones, we fell to skipping stones. It was an ideal spot - countless flat “sailers” at our feet, a broad expanse of smooth water, and a high slate bank opposite. Sometimes they would not skip “straight” but hop this way & that in a very erratic fashion. I said first they were grasshoppers, then, that they looked like
