looking exactly the same, with his brown-leather face, and incredibly flattened cap curving down over his head. I got a pleasurable thrill at seeing him - I looked hard at him but failed to catch his eye. I would like to have gotten up and tapped at the window, but could not get up the moral courage.
The sunlight falling duskily through a drawn blind, brings up a whole tram of memories. It reminded me of the drawn blind of the “middle room” of an old home, on a drowsy summer afternoon - It became a gateway to a sun drenched land where I roamed wide fields in August, with grasshoppers scattering before me in confusion; of baseball in the dusty road by my house.
When we were leaving Mike ____ was still washing, and I went & spoke to him. He did not know me until I told him, then he was all smiles. I went away feeling a pleasant glow.
