came from the east, a magnificent sight, one that always seems incredibly beautiful; great convolutions of smoke & vapor pouring out and up into the air, symbol of power.
Afterwards drove around various places looking for another subject, tho I felt in my heart I was done for the day. I was loath to break the spell. Stopped by the Post Office, a letter for Bertha which I took to her, then to N.Y.C. shops by Lossen Road, where I sat for a while, study the round house as a subject possibility, making a few studies. A.M. Worked in studio on sketch of yesterday.
P.M. Bought a box-kite for Arthur & he & I to fields to fly it. Wind from west just right, rather raw & cold. The kite went up beautifully, much to Arthur’s delight. At times flurries of snow, with the sun half shining. The sight of a kite high in the air against the steel gray caverns in the sky is one of the great things we experience in this life. The pull of the kite against our hands is a thrill.
