East to the valley between Attica and Varysburg- the black locust spot- east to the woods and little Vale where two years ago I explored (following an unsuccessful attempt to work on black locusts) A fine brisk day, with sky partly cloudy. The open sugar-camp- no one around but the sap still steaming in the pans. The woods of slender straight half grown trees- the patch of blue sky, a feeling of some elemental quality to it. Later the little hill, with large looming clouds; and I felt again some primitive quality about it, and I thought of looking northwest at blackberry time on the ridge above the Little Beaver Valley.
To the by-road on the Attica-Varysburg road, leading east at the school-house- wandering over hills and woods. Finding and picking my first real bouquet of hepaticas.
While on a hill, a pair of bluebirds came and perched on some fence posts near me. The rich, incredible heavenly blue of the males- I cannot put into words the feeling it gave me.
