Got two packages of candy in a slot machine and ask station master where road is thatOleanbus goes. Directs me one mile west so down railroad. The candy proves unbelievably stale and I throw it away –
At Machias proper turn south with intention of walking until I meet bus. Growing tired, I sit on grassy bank by roadside, and make drawing of hills to the east above the railroad – tho not having a very far view of road to south, I am nervous about seeing the bus in time-
Finish drawing and walk again – some red-streaked apples that have a good acrid taste – Evening settles over the valley with bewildering beauty – Bus comes.
The ride north inn the fading light – swift – a delicious cold wind hurling in the windows – a flaming red afterglow to the N.W. lurid and ominous – recedes slowly – a great bank of dark clouds separates it from the S.W. sky which is cold and autumn-like –
Elma – complete night – the light ofBuffalo.
As we are going along, stars were clearly visible above the hills – I thought that how little I know yet of various natural phenomena in respect to their relation to each other in point of time. I thought that a poet could summarize a whole season in a single phrase by referring to a certain star (if he knew its name) rising over wheat-stubble-

Painting all day on an idea using the bearded hills.

Working on childrens’ tower to make it safe – four strenuous days of pounding and hammering and sawing. It was most pleasant in the mornings, when the nights cold still lingered tempered by the September sunlight falling aslant thru the willow in whose branches I was working.
