woods, the ground dropped abruptly into a steep cliff leading to a dense wooded swamp, full of pine-trees – I take a descending path and soon find myself among open little round hills – ascending them I come upon a secluded farmhouse situated in a ravine, with fields and wooded hill beyond. A farmer plowing – east to woods – shed by stream – a dense wooded hillside – where I found many hepaticas – pick bouquet for Bertha –
Strike north across fields; - the fantastic stump fence on the top of the ravine – drink at spring – find narrow road. The walk in it a rare pleasure – for some distance it follows edge of wide valley thru which ran a winding stream which reflected brilliantly the sunset sky – come to Bullis Rd. which I knew led into Elma – turn here abandoning idea of walking to Clinton – shortly picked up by a man of my own age and his mother – take me in to Elma - pass farmhouse where Martin and I once visited, and beyond there an old wasteland of stumps and small evergreens –
Walk to Clinton and Bowen, where I inquire about a bus. Wait outside for half hour, munching almond bar and enjoying the clean cold twilight blending into dark.
Friday –Apr. 29, 1932–
A day spent in working about the yard. Herbein over early to plant bushes and vines. A still, clear hot day – Midmorning Martine telephones he and his mother leaving at once for our place, on account of Charlie having to go to hospital. I find myself wandering around the yard on endless errands unable to concentrate – finally after dinner get down to spading and burying chicken manure. Delving into this foul pile was almost too much for my stomach but I soon grew used to it, much to my surprise. Children interrupt me at times to plant iris and buckeyes for them in their gardens – Bertha sweeping up the yard. Finish my task at 6 0’clock, tired and stiff beyond measure – Before I can clean up the “folks” arrive.
Evening spent in talking, all of us sleepy and tired.
