Beforenoonout making studies of maples for “The Hermit” – the wind chills to the bone – Shortly afternoon wind swings to E-S. E - and rain commences – soon a heavy downpour – the beneficience of spring rain – from the Buffalo Harbor comes the sound of the fog horn, like some mythological or prehistoric beast – roofs, boards all flat surfaces are soon reflecting the sky in glistening light –
Planted six maple seedlings which Goekle gave me.
A pleasant afternoon in the studio – letters to the Roots and Miss Sherwood – studying “The Hermit” drawing and finally at late afternoon playing Negro Spirituals and Beethoven’s Quartet in F Minor, Opus 95 – Its beauty poured in on me anew – it is most strange, original music written after a law that was Beethoven’s own. P.M. to Herbeins –
P.M. toBuffaloand to B’s – discuss frames. Mr. Nussbaumer recalls Sides. B & I to Albright Gallery to look at frames – Meet Mr. Washburn, the new director. Home at5:00after buying stockings for M.A. To studio – I think that my original outlook on nature is slowly becoming dulled – the intimate tree-studies I used to do get out 1919 paintings of sulphur stream –
At late twilight great long orange openings in the northern sky -
