One could stand in it and feel sheer physical pleasure in its contact – The air is full of toad-songs and calls of various birds. Saw a house-wren twice.
Reading in John Muir’s A Thousand mile walk to gulf – What a rare simple nature must his have been! His frequent reference to his Creator, his pausing to drink in the beauty of the earth, and giving thanks to God for all the beauty around him, are noble traits. As one looks over the field today with its over-press-agented heros of pen and brush, etc. it seems as if we have fallen on dour, sterile days.

Awaken early – decide to go to Gowanda. Up and dressed in a hurry. Bertha up and helps get lunch ready. Get 7:38 bus to Buffalo. Arrive at Erie Station only to find train had left twenty minutes before.

Patch of spring-beauties – I pick a bouquet for Bertha, and wrap them up carefully.
Leave woods and strike across fields for old rail-road bed. Storm now is quite a blizzard – down road-bed to hills, over hills road and thence south to pine-woods –looking for a place to eat lunch. Cross here – find a group of logs and bushes on side of woods away from wind where I eat my lunch with great enjoyment – listening to the wind roaring on all sides, tho it was calm where I sat; distances pale and feathery.
Lunch over, northwards across the fields to road. A perfect thistle-plant – very beautiful – East along road – almost to main road – to dense pine woods attracts and I go visit it. A maze
