In bed a week with gripp – then whole family got it.
Yesterday P.M. by bus toJamison Rd.then walk east to Skunkcabbage swamp. A quiet warm day – I sweat as I go along – the flaming yellow willow – Dry white mud along the road glaring in the sun (it recalled a thrill of my boyhood when the tops of muddy ruts out in front of our house first turned white in March) – My legs are weak, but the landscape opening up before me as I strode along was like a benediction – I could scarcely look enough. Things have a bleached out pale look in the hot white sunlight. The east and north sides of hills have great patches of old dirty snow – it does not suggest snow at all – The brilliant red willows.
The swamp – a confused babel of toads and frogs – skunk-cabbage well up – the atmosphere of the swamp fills me with vague yearning and sadness and pleasure –
On return – snowdrops in a yard – one of the most startling and beautiful flowers of early spring – how can I look long enough – love of their beauty is agonizing – the asphalt road catches a glare from the sun, which is growing misty, trees are black against it.
Today – the heavy rain and mists – the sir seems full of the calls of meadowlarks and toads – mounting paper in studio –
P.M. helping Bertha rearrange bed – rooms – grackles around studio.
Spring beauties and hepaticas coming up – I got the latter
