Sat. Mar.11 –
Stayed in house awhile so Bertha could walk out and see the effect of the storm. Then out myself with sketchbook – walk around town – men shoveling snow offUnion RoadnearSeneca Creek Rd.– piles higher than my head.
P.M. to Buffaloto sketch and take Bertha’s “Daffodils” to be reframed – walk in Indian Church Roadalmost to R.R. before bus comes along. At framers meet Carl Baedemeir. My business dispatched – I walk out Sycamore, thenClinton and then Eagle – studying snow effects and watching the busy negro life – Negroes have a way of doing something to a neighborhood – I saw man vividly picturesque places. To N.Y.C. R.R. – a fine neighborhood – the old mansard house hugging the rails. ToClinton – get street-car to city line – was intending to walk home but Mrs. Kelly’s daughter picked me up.
Sat. Mar. 12
A “slight” day – work a little on the winter picture. I am at the point with it where it becomes drudgery to finish it – Stop at mid-afternoon to listen to broadcast of Rimsky Korsakoff’s “Sadko” to hear and not to see, it seemed like Italian opera in places – the song of the Norseman, and the song of the Hindu sounded fine – Had I been choosing, I would have directed Sadko to go to the Norseland without hesitation, for the Norseman’s song was by far the finest. In fact I think it one of the great songs of the world.
Evening – listen to concert of Phila. Orch. Of all modern Russian music – The Program –
Symph: Poem “The witches flight” by Nassilende
Mongolian Diptych (Funeral Retreat of Genghis Khan)
(The morning of the barking of dogs) by Illiachenko
Symphony of Psalms – by Stravinsky
Prometheus, the Poem of Fire – Soriabine
Pictures from an Exhibition – Moussogorsky
The first two seemed too puerile and too obviously Chinese.
