am to lay low, so I retreat to the studio – M.S. and C. dressed in long dresses busily going in and out of the playhouse – so ludicrous I take photos – the Late afternoon has a nostalgic spring feeling – the shouts of children have a different relation to the air –
Bertha’s visitation turns out to be not so bad. She invited to a “silver tea” – next Saturday –
Finish reading Stanley Vestal’s Kit Carson, a thrilling book.
Sat. Feb. 27, 1932
In bed all day with cold – reading “God have mercy on us” which Frank leaned to me and has been after me to read. It is one of the best American accounts of the war and in as much as it was a prize winner in a contest, it belies my contention that nothing good is done for a prize.
Sun. Feb. 28, 1932
Dream last night – an autumn day weird gray skys on lower ground a beautiful horse – chestnut tree with leaves all yellow –
Out of bed by 11:30– feel weak and nervous – after dinner radio concert – last half given to Beethoven’s 3rd. Frank brings over “Famous Sheriffs and Western Outlaws.”
Mon. Feb. 29, 1032
A regular March day – alternate sunshine and angry scudding clouds, sometimes light showers of bullet-snow (some fell at 45* temperature) –
At midmorning Frank called from his upstairs window as I was going past and wanted me to help initiate a new pistol he had – I declined. Firearms have never charmed me.
Started preliminary work in preparation for oil-painting “old Tavern byLake Erie” – I am expecting much from it.
