peculiar circular frame that turned on a central axis – on it were hung long roller-towels, which it seemed had just been washed by some laundry girls who were laughing and working in a shed next to it. Their method of drying clothes was to whirl them in the sunshine on this apparatus – It was going now, the glaring white towels fluttering formed a striking contrast to the weather blackened old house – Beyond the latter was a tall structure of brick, seemingly some sort of memorial building – The hour was almost noon and just as the sun reached the meridian and commenced to pass it, one part of the architecture after another leaped suddenly out of the shadow in rapid succession, and the result was one of bewildering beauty. I watched it fascinated –

To Buffalo– greins W.C. paper to sch. – he shows me sketch of a place I had also sketched a few days before. OutNiagara St.to Virginia (the way I used to walk to work) down Virginia, then to foot of Maryland – thence down canal to Georgia reveling in the warm spring-like day in spite of my cold and grippe-y feeling – cross bridge, down R.R. to Evans’ Elevators, thence to foot of Main. Tired – take car uptown where I shop awhile, and lunch at one-arm “an egg a little better on a poppy” – shop some more then check my stuff and take car to foot of Main, thence under bridge to canal. Smoking ruins of a big fire which a workman told me started the day before at4 p.m. CrossMich.BridgetoIsland– always here it seems like a different world – The sun shining warm – road miry – great stir around the boats – riveters going - exciting – a few gulls – human scavengers prowling in the dumps around the Jungle – the air fresh –
Cold worse – I go back uptown, my mind full of plans for work – finish shopping and take bus home – Bertha disturbed over impending visit of Pres. Minister’s wife – Fearing a “touch” I
