Make studies of pine-trees and farmhouse –
East up over hill – a flat table-land wide and vast up the August moon – off in the distance threshing is in progress –
Circle cornfield to get into a grove – here find a few red raspberries, and thimble-blackberries –
Eat lunch under a wide maple south a view over the Cherry Creek valley to east and north – the distances quiver in a dense blue haze-
Down hillside to road with intention of walking toSouth Dayton–
A long hot walk – after following highway for some time, a wide swampland and thicket, beyond which the railroad looks inviting, and I make for it – the swamp dry and hillocky – countless grasshoppers – walk almost balance of way on railroad – arrive in S. Dayton tired and hot – another charming village with wide lawns and great trees – while waiting for train – I consume large quantities of root beer and such which only increases thirst –
Wonderfully clear warm summer weather – The last two nights have been clear, and stars easy to see – I took the sky map and determined to trace and identify all the constellations visible – this I did and it is a pleasure to have added new ones – on the second night about 10:30 as I was going into the house, I saw the Pleides rising in the east-[1]
