The blizzard out of the Northeast has covered trees and houses with an electric white – the sky hangs close to the earth –
There is something cheering and friendly about the pleasant tracks along the railroad.
It occurs to me that about this time every year there is a northeaster, bringing either an ice-storm or a wet snow - It was in 1920, and last year – the other years I can’t remember-
This is regular Christmas Card weather to paint which it would be difficult to avoid being trite and banal. And yet it is indescribably beautiful to look at. The wet snow from the north had already covered the sides of trees and houses, and now light fluffy snow-flakes fill the air – the sun is shining in the S.E. with a pale silver-gold light, and each flake seems to reflect it, filling the air with a dazzling sparkle-
To orchestra concert last night with S – who shared with me some passes he had received. I had not anticipated it because the program did not seem interesting; but the surprise of the evening was The Dance of the wine – press, and Romeo’s Ride fro “Guilietta and Romeo” by Zandonai, an Italian. Very modern, with terrific rhythm and roar. It was marvelous-
Afterwards to one-arm for coffee and pie – Our conversation was lively and unpremeditated – ___________________________
To produce great work an artist must first have a high aim and ideal. Then his difficulties and obstacles will not hinder him.
Worked hard all afternoon on children’s portfolios – finish at 5:30. When I went out the beauty of the twilight was startling – Clear watery sky with a dazzling metallic green cast, the snow covered house roofs against it a rich cold blue –[1]
