Along the North Railroad –
I felt all day the endlessness of time that childhood fills – the long drawn out white morning, with white train smoke; (?)with their gaunt trees & queer chorus –
The sun became half hidden by gray mists, & the day went on unchanging – a ceaseless round of infinite tones of shifting sunlight & gloom – a cold wind – I lay in a little grove, closed my eyes and saw the long forgotten noon of boyhood, of remoteness found in a steaming marsh – The afternoon drifted on endlessly; what a tremendous stagnation of growth & brooding[i]
