[inscription reads] " saw a sparrow-hawk fly low over the willows. He appeared not to notice them, tho (sic) they flew up in greatest confusion. / A wonderful swamp, nettles great ragweed & spanish needles far above my head. Only means of travel are cattle paths. / A certain species of willow seems like green glutin, struck by suns rays. Sun-bloated. / Sumacs in swamp are red. / Hawk sailing high in the pure blue, the wind & sun whitened trees below. / September noon! White dusty road against the sky. Trees struck by a south sun by yellow. Brisk southest (sic) "
